Crystal sometimes does this, especially if I need to move her to get into my bed! It looks quite fearsome, but the snap is only a faux and if I give her a few minutes, she's then coalesces and relaxes. I'm very laissez-faire with her moods as being an existentialist I believe dogs have their needs for space and privacy, just like us. My wife tends to treat her like a soft toy, repeatedly picking her up for cuddles etc. Consequently, I think she finds time with Dad less stressful. I do notice she occasionally enters very deep REM sleep and I try very hard not to disturb her in this mode. Also although she tends to look fully awake after stirring, she can be a bit comatose for a few minutes sometimes. I have the empathy to know that feeling and give her space to 'come to' in her own time.
