Cooking increases food safety and digestability. Therefore I have always home cooked my food. My dogs have aged gracefully and one turns 14 next week and another next month, they are still very active and youthful. So cooked home prepared diets worked out pretty well for us. I have a 3 yo dog that also is eating home prepared food and so far so good.
I would suggest you read petdiets.com / the ask the nutritionist section is interesting and discusses many of these issues. She is a vet who has specialized in nutrition for over 20 years and is very knowledgeable.
