I don't think you should try to prevent a puppy from gaining weight. His weight in the first year is due to his genetics not his diet. He will probably mature to somewhere around 7 - 8 lbs, so don't worry.

He needs plenty of nutrition in his growth time, so just make sure you feed him a good quality puppy food, but don't get too carried away with treats. They seem to grow in spurts.... Rounder then taller, etc., puppy's can look pudgy early on, but will even out as they mature.
