The snakeskin and fancier textured editions would definitely benefit from a leather protector.

Great question. I would contact your town/county offices that handle dog rabies registration and ask if they can issue a duplicate. Considering it would be easy to lose a tag, they should be willing to do it.
The only other option would be a holder clip that is easier to transfer than those little rings. I know these can be bulky on really small dogs though.
