WOW!! 6-8 hours is a very long time. Imagine if you had to go really bad and you had to hold it for that long. I would feel sooo bad. Louie is in his crate only at night and sometimes during the day when he has been running around playing and has not knapped and I know he needs to knap, I'll put him in his crate.
I know that most people that work do leave their babies in a crate (only when they are being potty trained) after that, they gate an area in their home or buy a play pen and put food, wee wee pads, and crate and toys in there. I would recommend a dog walker if your baby is going to have to be alone for a while. I just don't feel right about leaving a poor little baby in a crate for more than 4 hours unless it's at night and he's sleeping. The play pen works wonders!!!
