My boys have never needed the protectors, but some dogs do like them while breaking in some of the BB colors. Max and Teddy have all of their chest/arm hair, so maybe that has something to do with it. Their primary BB is the Classic Black, which is a little stiffer when new. They are really soft now with use.
I have never treated my boys' BB with anything, although BB recommends it. We use them in the rain and snow and never had a problem. Just be sure to lay it flat to dry and don't put it near a heat source. Leather will shrink if subjected to heat, like in the back window of a car or a on a radiator.
