I use a mustache trimmer between the pads on the paws. It just takes practice for both you and your pup. First I cut the leg hair that hangs around the foot, when the dog is standing on a counter, and looking down the foot.
I also use the mustache trimmer to shave the top 1/3 of the ear flap. It does not make the leather rough. You aren't really shaving to bare skin. Always hold the trimmer flat against the ear flap. Never run the trimmer up the edge such that the flap could go into the trimmer and get cut.
Yorkies normally do not have their coats thinned. Maybe on a cotton coat. I'm not sure if clippers are used for that. I think thinning shears would be better.
