Good Cop Story Tonight I was walking my Aunt to her car & I see something in the road, now it's around 9:30 P.M. & dark so I can't see exactly what it is but thinking it's a dog. I start walking in it's direction & start hearing some not so nice noise coming from it at about the same time I realize it's a dog & it's limping badly on it's rt front leg. Now, I'm ready to go to bed & in no mood to be trying to rescue an ungrateful dog who'd just as soon bite me as look at me & I now see that it's an injured PitBull . So now I know it's injured & am not about to let it go, for her safety & the Publics safety. My DH comes out looking for me just at the time I see she's injured & I had him bring me a bowl of water some dog food & treats. I started talking in my doggie rescue voice & she stopped talking ugly to me so I set down the water bowl about 2 ft from her & I backed up, still talking to her she limped over to the bowl & drank nearly all of it & proceeded to lay down in the middle of the street. Great, now I'm stuck standing in the middle of the street with this injured BLACK dog in the pitch dark. I sent my DH back in the house for the phone & I called the non-emergency # for the PD as that's what you do here where I live for a found dog. After about 20 min I had managed to coax her out of the street & on to my lawn with the treats at about the same time the Officer arrived (without a catch pole) UGH. I told the lady on the phone that she needed to make sure he had it as this dog was injured & NOT friendly. So out pops this very TALL & very intimidating (to the dog) officer with NO catch pole. To my surprise this man stayed with me for the next almost 3 hrs & did his best to help me catch this dog. He was not leaving till this dog was caught & safe. He finally called for another officer to go get the animal control truck & the catch pole. I could clearly see that he was nervous to get near her & don't blame him as now she'd directed her ugly tone towards him but at no time was he angry or irritated at the dog. He was very compassionate to her needs. Now, after the 1st hr he knew that she was just hurting & scared & wanted desperately to catch her so she could get the help she needed. We both discussed that she was actually a good little dog but definitely needed a better owner then she was dealt. So in the end I had gained her trust & was able to get the leash & then the catch pole on her. I only wanted the catch pole on her as I knew she wasn't going to just jump in the truck for him & feared things could turn ugly again at that time. Well by the time we started to walk her to the truck, she would not take her eyes off me & was trying to get away from him to get back to me so I asked him to hand me the pole & hang back a bit just till I got her to the truck so he did. Now were at the truck & he looks at me & said, this is the part I HATE. I said what ? putting her in the truck ? that's the easy part. He tells me yes but I can't do it without somewhat chocking her & I hate doing that. Now I'm knowing he's the most compassionate Cop I have ever dealt with. I asked him if I could just get in the truck, thinking she would jump in after me & he looked at me like I was crazy, lol. He finally agreed to let me try, so in I went & before I could get turned around in this little space meant for a med sized dog, she was in & had her head tucked tightly under my armpit. She was just a scared, injured dog who just needed some love & understanding & that Cop was definitely one of the rare . I kept my eye on him the whole time as I was afraid he might try to shoot her if she made 1 wrong move but the guy never had his hands near his waist, not once. I'm thinking I might put a Thank You to the nice Officer who went out of his way to help catch an injured dog, in the news paper. I didn't even get his name. Do you all think it might get him in trouble ? I have had other officers come out after animal control hrs & unless the dog will jump in their car willingly, they will do nothing to help & act like I just wasted their time. |
