Abscesses smell bad... cuterebra don't have an odor other than fresh blood, which is what that appears to be. It's important to get to the vet quickly bc if the dog scratches and injures the larvae or if it is broken when one tries to remove it, it will release toxins that will cause anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction). If there are rabbits in the yard, look for large, non-biting, black flies... if any of these are present, cuterebra is a good possibility.
