Don't know about neutering, but Elvira is just 4 mos. old and they said she was fine to be spayed. They do such little incisions and stuff now days... and she was at 4.6 pounds - big enough he said. She's doing great (this is day 2).
If you are worried, I'd call some other vets and see what age they neuter.
