Is your puppy a boy or a girl? You wrote both he and she.

I held Max most of his first few days at home with us. He was nervous most of his first week. Keep exposing your puppy to new sights and sounds. Be calm and confident, cheerful, and your puppy will settle in. Have your husband sit quietly on the floor as much as possible with a toy. Let the puppy approach. You can also use small treats like pieces of kibble to entice to puppy to come to your husband.

I think sometimes puppies can be overwhelmed because their humans are so excited. The puppy feels like a rock star with stage fright.

Relative to the car, Max hated the car for about a year. A doggy car seat helped him. Some dogs do better having a view, others feel better being low and concealed in a carrier. I blogged some tips about making travel more enjoyable:
