I have an 8 yr. old Min Pin that still does this on occasion. When she does I use this time to mop the kitchen floor really good!! And when the water bowl is empty she digs in it like it's spring fed and water is just gonna come up from the bottom of the bowl. At least my other dogs can count on Sassie when their bowl is empty. If your pup looks like he is having fun then I would probably just put some towels down and let him go for it.
