My vet told me I need to pluck Callie's ear hair and that I also need to clean them weekly. Callie will grow very thick ear hair but my moms rescue almost grows none. It is not supposed to hurt them and Callie does not act like it hurts her at all. My vet said the ear hair can hold onto moisture that can cause ear infections and yeast infections. I imagine it's even more important if they have floppy ears that get less air like my baby.
