I am aware of some breeders who will charge more for AKC papers. It is an expense to them. I do not see anything ethically wrong with offering a puppy at one price if the AKC papers are not desired, and another price if the buyer wants the papers.

Typically the price of a puppy reflects everything the breeder may have put into the puppy: genetic testing of parents, vet care, research, showing and championing the parents for evaluation, AKC registration, and so on.

Taking care of a puppy for 12 weeks (the ideal) costs more than 8 weeks.

I have mixed feelings about deposits. In your case, the breeder mislead you about the sire, whether or not he was 'proven.' I think she should refund your deposit.
