I'll warn you, this is a very big project! I've done it. For best results, take the hardware off the door. Clean it thoroughly to remove oils, like hand oils from the knobs.
I'm on the fence about the durability of painting door hardware. I have to redo our kitchen cabinet knobs periodically. That might have something to with the fact that we wash our hands right before touching them. Maybe the soap and dampness is hard on them. My dad also has natural hand oils that seems to take the finish off of everything.
Hinges are the hardest, making sure the paint doesn't drip or prevent the hinge from working properly.
If your hardware is in good shape, I would be inclined to live with the shiny brass. Definitely test on a not so visible door first.
