Did you adopt an adult dog or do you have a young puppy? Behaviors can vary according to age and history of the dog/pup.

Have you had him very long? He should not be sad about the neutering but he may be sleepy the first and second day. Some dogs act like nothing happened and others seem to need a recovery time after neutering.

My little girl loves to stop and sniff things when we walk. Usually they can tell when another animal has been in a particular spot and they will stop to check it out. I let her sniff but after a minute or two tell her "let's go" and she will start walking again.

It's good that you are giving him the opportunity to walk and explore with you. Dogs just love getting out and checking things out and the exercise is really good for them.
