Your household sounds similar to us. I work nights, hubby works days, Huey is rarely alone for more than a couple of hours.
I don't know what kind of boat you have, but we got Huey at 7 weeks old and by the time he was 12 weeks (and had all his shots!), he was coming with us to the boat we had & we would anchor out on the water for days at a time. The main problem was finding a life jacket tiny enough for him at that age, but once we did, he was swimming in the river with us & playing king of the raft as he sat on his raft and got pushed around from person to person.
You may find that Chester likes being on the boat, once he is a little older. His pics are adorable!

Here is Huey as a tiny pup. The second pic is on the boat-you can see he is laying next to the cooler...
