When we moved into a new house, we had a problem with ants and used the boric acid bait method. It worked great.

Mix powdered boric acid with peanut butter and honey. Cut a plastic straw into 1 inch lengths. Load up a syringe with the bait mixture and fill up the straw sections. Unscrew electrical plates (for plugs and light switches) and drop the bait filled straw sections in between your walls.

Works great, and your pets can't get to the bait.

The ants did come back about a year later and we had to treat again, but since then it's been over 6 years and we haven't seen any ants.
