The top is split and when you open both sides it is a very large and is treated so very hot dishes can be placed on it. I keep my linens in the top two drawers and dishes and glasses I don't use every day. The pic shows the top closed.

I have a table that seats eight when we have family dinners and my sil put it on wheels, for small groups I just don't open it.
