In my past experience I found to first train a puppy indoors was the easiest way to go, when they are 100% pad trained start the outdoor training. Walk pup the same time every morning. If you work, walk 2 times a day, once before you leave for work, again when you come home from work, a 3rd time just before bed time. Consistency and patience is a must. The first few times you leash walk, Gussie will more then likely just sniff everything, I always used the command words pee-pee and poo-poo on the entire walk. Even if he doesn't make, keep up the schedule, same time everyday. Dogs are creatures of habit, He will get get. My pups were 100% pad trained at 5 months, After they had all their shots the leash waking started. All my pups were 100% house broken at 8 months old. I was a working gal, my babies were alone for 9 hours, never a accident. Just remember Consistency. Good luck.
