Planning for new puppy Hi, Our pup will be coming to us at 11 weeks in mid-July and we've been gradually getting ready. But it's been over 15 years since we've had a puppy. We're planning to train him to use pee-pads since it's not always easy to take him outside at night (a lot of not-very-friendly raccoons in the area). We know that it's important to not let him out in the house unsupervised. We'll have a crate and an x-pen and will set up the x-pen in the kitchen with a pee-pad so that when we're out shopping etc. he'll have a bit of movement but won't be out in the house. And at night we plan to have him in his crate in the bedroom with us. However, much of the day, we're in the family room which is down several stairs from the kitchen. I was thinking of setting up an xpen there as well (we have two) for when we can't watch him every second. Is that a good idea or should his crate instead? If I use the xpen, should I put a pee pad in that one too? If so, do I take him to that pee-pad to pee when he's in that room -- or to the kitchen (where the regular pee-pad will be)? If he's with us in the family room most of the time, I gather I should also keep a dish of water there? Thanks. Linda |
