Default Potty Training Frustrations

Hello All,

Thank you in advance for any advice, it is very appreciated!

I have had my Yorkie for about 2 months now. She was about 6 months old when I got her and was working on pad training.

During work hours and at night, she is in her ex-pen with access to a mat. When I first got her, I started pad training her (in her ex-pen) and she became pretty reliable (some accidents, but would go into her pen when I was home to go to the bathroom. I started to train her to go outside too (on my patio). On weekends and late evenings, she is pretty reliable and will now go outside on her own to go. (Of course, lots of praise/treats).

However...sometimes she just REFUSES to go outside or on her mat. Instead she will randomly potty/wee wherever she pleases. I have noticed this is the worst in the morning before work (sometimes she holds it when I take her out and refuses to go when I know she has to), when I take her out when I just get home from work (same issue), or when she thinks I am going to leave. These are her most "accident prone" times. I also think she has "accidents" when he is not getting "enough" attention. For example, this weekend she poo'ed on the carpet when I was busy entertaining a guest and today she did the same thing when I was on the phone.

I really don't want to crate her, as I feel its not right to crate her when I am working. When, I am home, I hate to crate her (or lock her in her pen) since she is confined when I am at work. She is very intelligent, so I know she can be potty trained, its just a matter of whether she wants to (and also a matter of what I can do better). What am I doing wrong?! I would appreciate any help! Thank you!
