I always try to befriend the person on the other side so if they are allowed to let anything slide maybe they'll let me! And I always try to remember that they are just doing their job. In most cases they don't make the rules and they certainly don't get any of the money collected. They only collect it because that is what they are paid to do.
I've also found that if you know that you are going to be late with a payment, and you call in advance and try to make arrangements or at least let them know that you are trying to work with them, they will do what they can to help you out.
I don't think most of them really want to give you a hard time, unless, of course, you yell at them.
And that's just human nature reacting.
