Great plan. Don't be nervous to get the small one - I have 2 smaller ones and they're just as sturdy as my 8-pounder. In fact, my 8 pounder easily has them beat in terms of health issues.
I do agree with you that a 4 pound-range yorkie is a lot easier to travel around with. My Mother in Law is in her 70s, and she finds it much easier too.
