I do my own grooming (bathing, cutting and trimming). It's not bad at all. I try to split it up into weekly tasks. Small stuff one week (feet pads, genital areas, ears, face). Then another week I will do body hair (clip or scissor cut depending on time of year). I have his nails trimmed every three weeks at Petsmart they dremel them so they aren't sharp, costs $9 so worth it. Shampoo condition every week. If I am doing a trimming, I will do before his bath or give him the bath the next morning.
Mine has a tracea issue so I would never consider taking him to groomer. When they do his feet I always say he has knee problems so they don't yank at their knees

and someone has to hold him because of the tracea issue instead of putting the loop around their neck which I hate. I had a vet cause such problems with his neck because she looped him, he coughed and gaged for three days, not worth it. I won't let them take them out of the room when they do this because I have had problems.
