If the vet is believes it is a UTI. They should always do a urinalysis and culture. They should also select for sensitivity to antibiotics. They can not just guess for what antibiotics an animal needs. You can not lower antibiotic doses there is a certain range of mg/kg they need to stay in for the drug to be effective. If not you could get resistance and this leads to more trouble. And you always need to finish the course of antibiotics. If you do not like your vet AMC (ASPCA) is great but any referral place will be expensive.
