I think you're thought process for prices is about right. Location also matters I think you should ask what type of health testing the breeder does. This was a big concern for me as my last yorkie passed away unexpectedly from a neurological disorder. Will your breeder be there for the life of the dog?
I didn't have to ask too many questions because she told me before I even had a chance to. You can ask for references if you like. And if they interview you that's a good sign because they care about what type of home they are going for. And if you see that they participate in conformation and members of the local/national breed and kennel clubs.
