I'm guessing it varies depending on where you live. I live in CA., my vet quoted me close to $400.00. I looked around for a low cost spay/neuter clinic. I of course did research and made sure they had a good reputation. Everything is al a carte at low cost clinics which is why I believe it is cheaper. The neuter was $80.00 plus pain meds are mandatory and cost an extra $20.00 bringing you up to $100.00. I don't know why they don't include pain meds in the basic price since it's mandatory. Why wouldn't anyone want to buy the pain meds?
I also purchased pre op blood work. They contacted me saying that he needed two tooth extractions, which I also had to purchase antibiotics for. After everything I ended up paying about $240 or $260 for neuter, blood work, pain meds, 2 tooth extractions, and antibiotics for the extractions. Still cheaper than what my vet quoted me.
Look around for low cost spay/neuter clinics and do your homework. If you're okay with just the basic procedure plus pain meds, you can get out of there paying under $200. Hopefully no tooth extractions are needed and nothing goes wrong. It seems like tooth extractions are very common and best to do when they're being neutered or spayed.
