This is how I cut my boy. He is 11 months and I was having the same problems with knots and him peeing on himself. I kept his tail long at first, but I didn't like it, so I shaved it off. I gave him a bath and brush today, took me 1/3 the time and he didn't have pee pee stains!
The pic of him with long coat is how he looked right before I trimmed him.
