I am sorry for your loss of your Silkies. You were blessed to have them for almost 16 years.
For neutering: I had Max neutered at 6 months and his brother Teddy was closer to 8 months. The right time is a matter of debate. Some people advocate waiting until the growth plates in the legs close, which is closer to a year. Other people want it done early in hope of preventing marking, aggression, humping (although these things can start very early and are not guaranteed to end after being neutered).
My experience with Max and Teddy convinced me that if I have a male in the future, I will wait closer to a year. This is just my opinion.
