I agree that free feeding is usually recommended for young pups. Keep the food fresh, otherwise it may grow icky or unappetizing during the course of the day.
Max was a sturdy 3 pounder at 13 weeks, so I was able to do 3 sort of scheduled kibble feedings a day with a couple of small fresh food treats in between. He didn't gobble it down immediately like he does now.
