This may sound cruel to do but if you want him to eat what you buy leave it out. He will eventually get the point that's his food and he will have to get over it.
As for the dental, get a baseline cleaning and start brushing 2 times a week if possible . Use a finger brush and the tooth paste they sell for dogs.
I would get some PETZ life gel /spray as well.
