Default Going back to kennel?

I have a 5 year old yorkie that I adopted when he was 1. He came super spoiled and like a baby. I have only kept this going and probably made it worse-- he's like my child. Over a year ago I got a puppy who stays in his kennel all day while I'm at work.
However, my older one has never been in a kennel and would be so depressed, upset, may even give himself a heart attack kind of scenario. I want to put him in a kennel because when I thought he wasn't pottying in the house, he really has been.

The problem comes that he hasn't been in a kennel ever and I am gone upwards of 12 hours a day...don't judge--- nature of my job.

Should I just put puppy pads everywhere or kennel him and spend my days worrying about him? I hate to make him feel punished, upset, etc.
