Until I accidentally ran over my crate, no dog inside of it , Joey would get into it to escape the madness. He doesn't pee in the house, so didn't replace the crate. He has his spots in the house where he can escape to for some quiet time. Have you tried turning the crate to face the wall? Put the dog inside for say 5 minutes at a time every hour and let them know you are around. I don't know, probably trial and error.
