Default New owner needs help

Hello everybody I'm new to the forum & a first time owner as we'll. I was hoping I could get a little help with some questions I have. My puppy is an 8 week old male. I don't really feel comfortable with crate training since I have to work from 6-430 mon-thurs. and my fiancé works 8-5 so he would be in a crate for a long time each day. Currently I keep him puppy gated in the small hallway that connects my bedroom and the kitchen. It measures to be 3.5 feet by 5.5 feet. I was wondering if this was enough room for the little tyke. I put his bed toys food water and puppy pads in with him. He does really good with the pads when we are home. Has his slip ups but that's on us for not watching him close enough. He goes on the pads some when he is alone all day but today I came home to find the pads turned over and his bed dragged on top of them. Is there any advice that can be given on how to potty train for somebody that works all day? I know it will take some time I just want to make sure I'm doing it right. And he sleeps with me at night and holds everything all night until about 430 when I get up. Any advice would be appreciated
