First, how old is the puppy right now? That can matter. If still really young, then I would race home at lunch even if just for 5 minutes - do that for the 1st mth until your kids are off school - then you'll be all set! The kids now get home early, so that's great...that's the perfect amount of time btwn your lunch visit and when they get home. I think it'll work fine
