Did you switch his food or anything when he got home? If yes, I'd switch back to the old food. He should be tested for giardia -- even though in puppies it's more violent in terms of symptoms and he would technically be more ill, you just never know -- so I'd test for it. The problem w/ testing is that Giardia often hides under scope so it often will take more than 1 or 2 tests to confirm it's actually there.
Can you give the probiotic w/ peanut butter instead of w/ food? Mash the powder into the PB and see if that works; you could also try cheese.
Oftentimes, mucus at the END of a poo is just the anal glands emptying. When it's in the middle or around the poo, it's more related to GI irritation / or a pest.
You may also want to try giving a bit of canned pumpkin for extra fiber to see if that helps.
