Lawman, are you familiar with 'submissive peeing'? If you spank your dog and yell, you risk having your dog becoming so scared that he will become a submissive peer. Some have such problems that they pee just seeing their humans.
Also, dogs do not have padding on their butts like humans, and they have tails, so you risk injuring him.
Belly bands -- as Lynzy suggested. These are great backup for dogs who mark indoors.
