It's a very old, pagan tradition dating back hundreds of years. Everybody in the town is either on the side of the 'Red 'Oss' or the 'Blue 'Oss' - you can't choose, it depends on the one your particular family has always supported.
Everything starts at dawn, and carries on 'til late into the night. The whole town is bedecked with greenery and spring flowers, and there's a huge Maypole in the centre. There's a constant song which becomes quite mesmerising...the place is totally jam-packed, as people come from all over the world to witness it.
The huge black whirling thing (the 'Oss) - well, if you are caught by it, and it gets you underneath it's skirt....let's just say it's a fertility thing |
Our May Pole Dances and school Field Days seem pretty tame compared to you racy, pagan Brits' day- and night-long soiree with some getting caught under Ossie's big, black skirt with all those world-wide witnesses!!! Oh, my!!!
