Default Loose teeth

Hello I just joined this group and I am hoping someone could help me. I noticed my 5 year old yorkie boy had wiggly front teeth. Both on the top and bottom. We brush his teeth and give him pets life gel for the mouth. Also he eats very good food from the vet. Natures variety instinct raw food. Also I give him dental chews from dr. Mercola's website online. So I took him to the vet and he said he needs a dental cleaning. I have never done it because I didn't want to put him to sleep. So I did the cleaning 2 days ago and when I got him back all of his front teeth where gone!!!! I feel so bad now that I took him at all. The vet said his teeth where so loose that is was like pulling grapes off a vine. My heart aches and I want to know if anyone else has gone through this. Did I do the right thing? Is it true they are better off with out the wiggly teeth? His teeth did have some black stuff on them. He is only 5 is there anything else I can do to save the rest of his teeth?
