A hard carrier has to be strapped securely in the car and it has to be fitted properly for the dog. A tether will not hold a dog secure during a violent shaking in a vehicle while pets have a much better chance of surviving a roll over or other traumatic situation.

I have seen the results of these accidents way too many times. Even humans strapped in are horribly injured in highway accidents at high speeds. I have seen pets survive in carriers where their owners did not.
