Forgot to mention -- puppy hair tends to tangle. It gets much easier when they have their adult coat.
Also, I find that my boys' coats do better without a whole lot of leave-in products. Most sprays make their coats sticky and prone to tangling. When they are a mess, I use Pet Silk silk serum to undo tangles. I usually use it right before bath time or close to it.
