Dogs have staph intermedius (a bacteria) on their skin, naturally (just like humans have staph aureus, naturally). When something gets out balance, s.intermedius will overgrow and turn into an infection...when it becomes an infection, it's called pyoderma. It's very, very common. Tons of us here have had to deal w/ it in our dogs. Usually, it's treated w/ Simplicef x 30 days. Some of us have dogs in whom pyoderma is recurring...which is a bummer.

Skin issues are *always* secondary to allergies or another issue/disease...so pyoderma is a result of either allergies or another disease. The cardinal sign of allergies in dogs is paw chewing/licking and itching. Does your kiddo chew/lick his paws?
