I try to drop in and observe, if they ask, just checking prices, you can see a lot by what they do with dog they are working on when they talk to you and watch the dog when they re-approach them. Tools, neatness, overall interaction and rep, ask friends. I size up people pretty good so I go by gut instinct too. Also your dog will tell you, now the first few times its difficult and a good groomer will not do major work. If they do that would be a flag, yes you do what a customer wants but the first few times you explain the puppies stress levels.
