That injury just sounds so painful! Definitely puts you down on the pillows and makes life very hard, doesn't it? Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation first 24-48 and then heat as tolerated and in your case, bracing for support and to prevent further injury. And I imagine a few pain pills are in the offing - at least I hope so if you are hurting as badly as I think.
I'll sure be praying that the ortho says no surgical repairs are necessary and that merely continued bracing/support will let you heal normally. As a joint is involved and your future mobility, I would insist on seeing an Orthopedic Surgeon who sub-specializes in knee injuries and is well-versed in how a traumatic injury of the PFJ can affect you as you age and try to prevent traumatic arthritis from setting up in the patellofemoral joint. You don't need a hip or back guy now.
I hate walking on crutches!!! I practically can't manage it and it just wears me out. Stay down and rest, sleep all you can as the body just heals better with actual sleep helping it along as you aren't using up so many resources when asleep. I hope DH is nearby and can fetch things as you need them so you won't have to keep getting up - not good at this time.
Update when you see your Ortho and I pray your next medical news is good.
