Reading through the reviews on Amazon, sounds like the collar works the same way that the topical flea and tick preventatives do, by delivering pesticides into the dog's body/system. Thus, putting the collar on for brief periods would not be effective. Many people wrote that the collar took at least a week to be effective against ticks.

Several reviews said the collar did not work on long hair dogs. The collar must sit against the skin. A few reviewers said their dogs had skin reactions, similar to complaints with topical preventatives.

On the plus side, reviewers said that the collar succeeded where Frontline and others had failed with fleas and ticks.
