All dogs are just born with a need to conserve their resources/hoard, no matter their littermates or other dogs in the homes they inhabit. To a healthy dog, almost all of their life, food (or anything like food such as treats/chewies/even toys for some dogs) is seen as a vital resource and they often act as if they may never ever see another meal anytime they are exposed to it. Some dogs make a big game of hiding their resources and others do it with a certain desperation. Canines instinctively don't trust any humans or other critters around their food and usually see us all as competitors for it to some degree, though as most of them age and learn more of their humans' non-threatening natures, that resource guarding tends to wane in the well-adjusted, trusting dog.
