I don't think that once a day is often enough. I'd have someone check on him first thing in the morning, during the middle of the day, and again at bedtime. This is a lot to be putting a Yorkie through. Do you have any friends he could stay with? I would have my dog boarded at a quality kennel or doggy day care rather than leaving them alone for long periods of time...
