A chip is often done at the time of spay, when they are under anesthesia, and that is often around 6-8 months old.

However, I chose to have each of my girls chipped early just for their ID protection, and it was done without anesthesia. The vet assured me that it wasn't terribly painful and the microchip is about the size of a grain of rice.
