It's a delicate balance doing things to encourage them to eat without making them so nervous about eating. You don't want to hover and act anxious. If you put the food down and then immediately start offering additional enticements or alternatives, he will think there is something wrong with the food and not eat.

I presented Max's food like I was giving him gold.

That's a good idea I'll act like it's a treat instead of just his usual food
